Bowen Therapy

The Technique is a specific series of tendon, muscle and connective tissue movements designed to treat a wide range of problems and injuries.  It addresses every organ and system of the body via the acupuncture meridian system and the nervous system.  Gentle but powerful moves send neurological impulses to the brain which is given time to process and feed impulses back to realign the body.  Respecting this feedback loop is essential for allowing the body to restore its own natural balance.  Research indicates that this technique balances the autonomic nervous system which control 80-90% of all body functions.  This explains why and how Bowen Therapy works on multiple systems of the mind, body and spirit.

Bowen Therapy will help any condition which is the result of a misalignment in the energy of any system in the body.  It may be muscoskelatal, neurological, respiratory, gastrointestinal or conditions due to injury.  Using this "hands only" technique, the practitioner is able to manipulate the soft tissue in such a way as to effect fantastic results with a variety of conditions.  This technique relieves all types of pain and is so gentle that it can be used on everyone from newborn infants to the elderly.  Chronically ill patients benefit as well as the disabled.  It is also extremely effective as a remedial therapy for those overcoming sports injuries, accidents and other ailments.  It improves rehabilitation time, regardless of how old or recent the injury may be.  It has been used successfully in helping the body heal itself of athletic injuries including tennis elbow, sprained ankles, strained backs and torn hamstrings, asthma, fibromyalgia, TMJ, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome and a host of other maladies.

Historical Development: This technique comes from Australia and was developed by Thomas A. Bowen (1903-1982), of Geelong, Australia.  Little is known of Bowen's early years except that he studied medicine for a year before WW2 curtailed his studies.  After the war he returned to Australia where he worked in industrial chemicals.  It was while working as an industrial engineer, that he started to gain a reputation for body work.  People would come to him and Bowen doing seemingly very little, would relieve them of their aches and pains.

Word spread very quickly and before long he was treating people at home late into the night, and a change of career beckoned.  It was in the late 1950's, that with no formal qualifications, he started his therapy work full-time and shortly after he started his studies of  various bodywork techniques along with studies of Acupuncture and Shiatsu.   Due to the demand for this technique, he opened a full-time clinic and by 1975, was treating 13,000 patients a year, with 85% requiring only one or two visits to resolve their condition.  Since this humble start Bowen Therapy has spread around the world.

What makes Bowen Therapy different from other therapies?  Julian Baker, UK Trainer and Coordinator of the European College of Bowen Studies states;  "Many other therapies inflict the will of the therapist onto the patient.  In osteopathy, chiropractic and physiotherapy for instance, a diagnosis is made and treatment is given accordingly.  On the face of it this may seem OK, but  Bowen doesn't work like that.  The important thing about Bowen is that it allows the body the space to decide what is wrong and how to go about fixing it.  Many conditions will respond that the therapist was not even aware of, simply because the body has made the decision to restore the lines of communication to that area.  A Bowen therapist will realize that the body is capable of doing absolutely anything and that therefore any treatment should not be conditional."

"Diagnosis therefore is not generally an area that a pure Bowen therapist will enter.  Rather he or she will offer the work to the body and allow it to decide what, when and where it will use the treatment.  There are obviously certain moves for certain symptoms and conditions but in many cases, a basic balancing of the body is enough to clear many long standing problems without any need for specifics.  Bowen is not a substitute for medical advice but rather a chance for the patient's body to choose, rather than a set of symptoms being thrust upon it."
